Holy Moly, the Server has been Updated!

No guarantees that everything is working correctly, but at least it is running the latest version of Minecraft. :)

Server Updated to Minecraft 1.2.3

Go ahead and update your Minecraft clients, the server has now been updated to 1.2.3.

However!  I recommend that you do not put a lot of effort into building amazing things for the next week or so.  The server is currently running on Development and Beta builds, which may be unstable.  We may find it necessary to backup to the last stable version which was snapshotted on 3/8/2012 at 11pm EST.

I will have to update the Beta builds to Recommended builds as they come available.

What is NOT working:

1) The Censor does not work, so try to keep chat clean please.

2) Help Pages do not work.  Will try to get these back as soon as they are available.

3) For Mods, VoxelSniper may not work in the newly extended vertical regions… otherwise it should work.

Don’t Update Your Minecraft Client!

The number one rule for playing on a Minecraft server is to NOT update your Minecraft client (the software on your computer) when a new version comes out.  If you update your client you will most likely not be able to log into the server again.

Why can’t you log into the server after updating?

Minecraft servers run a special version of Minecraft called CraftBukkit.  CraftBukkit is NOT an official product from Mojang.  When Minecraft is updated, it always takes about 1 week (sometimes more) for CraftBukkit to support the new version.

And then, after that is done, all of the various plugin developers need to update their plugins.  This takes even longer!

So even though there may be some cool new Minecraft features you want to try out, they won’t appear on the server for a couple of weeks.  If you don’t want to get locked out of the server, DON’T UPDATE!  :)

Server Updates

It’s been a few weeks since the server has been updated and I am seeing random errors in the logs.  I am going to start putting together a build with the latest versions of all of the plugins, etc.  I’ll test that in a local environment before pushing it live.

The random server errors really aren’t that random… two things have been causing them I think…  1) Minebackup runs out of disk space because I back everything up to disk daily.  2) The server runs out of memory because of… not sure.

It is possible to double the server memory, but that would exceed what I am personally willing to spend on the server every month… though it could work with a few donations.

May experience random server crashes

I just noticed that the server crashed without me knowing about it.  I looked at the logs and saw a strange error that may be attributed to the CraftBukkit build.  The short story is that we may experience a random crash here and then until I update again… which may be tonight.

OTHER CHANGES:

  1. Removed the CAVE maps from the online game maps
  2. Removed maps that I thought were unimportant: Nether and End

The online maps are the biggest source of large files on the server.  Better to use less maps rather than more.

P.S. Dang “HonorBound”, you scary!

Added MCMMO plugin to give abilities and skills

Hopefully this won’t conflict with any other plugins!  Please let me know if it does.

Overview of what this plugin is about

  • /a – Toggle admin chat or send admin chat messages

  • /myspawn – Return to your own personal spawn as if you had died (use this instead of suicide)
  • /xprate <integer> <true:false> – Defines the global XP rate
  • /<skillname> – Displays information of the skill in game, useful for learning what something does without having to come back here and read about it.
Party Commands

Extra things to note about Parties.
  • The first person to join the party is the owner.

For example, type “/party bidoof” to join the party ‘bidoof’ anyone else in this party will receive no damage from you and you can speak to them exclusively using party chat.

Upgraded to the latest CraffitBukkit build

Everything went smoothly.  About the only difference is that I can now add the Factions dynamic map overall to the web game map.  I think it is very helpful.

Maybe give us a vote up on Minestatus.net?

Here is our little server status widget on Minestatus.net.  Might you be able to pop over there and give us a vote up?  A little exposure might help us get some new players onto the server.  Cheers!

If you want to stick this widget on your website, use this code.

Factions Transition Period

We installed Factions last night.  It is currently running along side WorldGuard, which I believe can work.  However, WorldGuard is still preventing things like PvP, etc.  So this is a transition phase while people set up their factions.

To learn all about Factions, go to the main Factions website.

It is difficult to know just exactly HOW to set up Factions and WorldGuard.  Like which plugin should govern which type of protection.  I wish I knew exactly how other servers set this up… but I don’t.

For now I have claimed the entire “City” region as a Factions Safe Zone.  I have no idea if that was the right thing to do or not… as WorldGuard still protects this area with it’s own “no build” rules, etc.

I set up my own Faction called “TheEmpire”, but I don’t expect anyone to actually join it.  I don’t really think my main account should be part of Factions as I would be too tempted to cheat.  I may purchase an additional Minecraft account just so I can share in the fun though.  I would not apply any admin powers to that account.

The User Guide and the Moderator Guide are still woefully out of date.  They are very difficult to create and maintain, but I know how useful they can be.  I think I might reduce them to essentially a printable list of commands, with a bit of explanation for the more difficult to understand commands.

Also!  I tried installed the mcMMO plugin and it failed!  I tried to install the Factions overlay to the Dynamic Game Map, but that failed too.  I may have to upgrade the server.

If you want to discuss anything above, I would post in the forums rather than a comment here.

Abixy is now on Minestatus.net

I just added us to Minestatus.net.  If you can think of other ways to potentially generate traffic, like posting on forums or Facebook, please do so.  I think we all benefit from more players on the server.

Also, notice the little Status Widget on the right side the home page —->  Pretty cool.
